Infant Mental Health Training for Early Intervention Providers in the Merrimack Valley

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lowell, April 2007 - The In-Time Infant Mental Health Training (In-Time) series, coordinated by Thom Child & Family Services and funded by Connected Beginnings Training Institute, an initiative of the United Way of Mass Bay & Merrimack Valley, and by a generous contribution from an anonymous donor, kicks off on Friday May 4th, in Lowell. The series will offer ten, half-day workshops and follow-up consultation to staff members from Merrimack Valley area Early Intervention Programs. Workshops will be held at the CTI James Houlares Early Childhood Building in Lowell.

In-Time training supports the science behind Early Intervention and relationship based Infant Mental Health practices. It addresses the gap between what we know, based on brain research, and the role parents, caregivers and Early Interventionists play in shaping a child’s development during his/her earliest years. The training is designed to provide in-depth preparation and supervision to Early Intervention home visitors.

The In-Time curriculum was developed by Libby Zimmerman, Ph.D., L.I.C.S.W., and Thom Child & Family Services, with funding for its development from the Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation. Trainings have successfully prepared Early Intervention staff in Springfield (2004) and Boston, (2006).

Dr. Zimmerman, Founder and Acting Director of Connected Beginnings Training Institute www.uwmb.org/connectedbeginnings, a leading voice in the field of infant-toddler mental health, is once again heading up the In-Time training team for the Merrimack Valley. Among the topics to be covered in the series are: Early Brain Development and Early Detection of Mental Health Problems in Young Children, What Infants and Toddlers Bring to Relationships – Interpreting Infant-Toddler Behavior, What Parents Bring to the Relationship – Exploring Parental Mental Health Challenges and Sources of Resilience, and The Influence of Culture in Shaping Care-giving Beliefs and Values.
